ADD/ADHD

I have tutored students of all abilities and backgrounds for over 20 years, and have a history of successfully working with ADD and special needs students. From 1983-1986, I was the lead teacher in the alternative education high school program at Carrington school in Durham, North Carolina. I specialized in helping students with special needs pass the GED and Adult High School Diploma tests. Since then, I have tutored students over the years with various learning disabilities. Although I do not have a degree in special needs, I have developed successful strategies from experience, I have a network of resource people to whom I can refer students, and I have testimonials on this website from at least two parents - Julie and Mary - whose students with ADD/special needs excelled with my tutoring help.

Leslie is a wonderful tutor! She helped me thoroughly prepare for the MCAT verbal section. I struggled with retaking the MCAT multiple times in order to improve my verbal section score. I did well on the science areas but could not grasp an effective strategy for the verbal section. I tried Kaplan and Princeton Review classes, studying on my own, and other tutors; however, my score still did not improve. It was frustrating to say the least. I started working with Leslie and immediately noticed a small difference. She taught me to read more critically, expand my vocabulary, and analyze the MCAT passages in a more detailed way. At first, my score did not improve, but after time the strategies started working. I continued to do everything she said and worked incredibly hard to truly understand her lessons. We advanced each session by going into more detail with the passages. For example, I would complete a new passage in a certain time frame. Then we would critically analyze the questions and answer choices. This helped me understand WHY the answer was correct and WHERE it was in the passage, something that was challenging for me. Over time, we developed a strategy that worked for me. I think this is crucial to MCAT preparation. Not every strategy works for every student like the larger companies suggest. Leslie was very good at working on this with me and diagnosing my weaknesses so they could be improved. After working with her for a few months, I felt more prepared for the MCAT verbal section than I had previous times. I improved my verbal score by 2 points, which was what I needed! Even this small improvement makes a huge difference and I have to thank Leslie for all of her help. I learned how to better take this part of the MCAT, but I also learned how to read more effectively, something that will help me in medical school. She was incredibly patient, kind, and very knowledgeable about the MCAT verbal section. She deeply cares and wants to help her students improve. Overall, I strongly recommend Leslie for an MCAT verbal tutor!

I worked with Leslie to prepare for the GRE verbal and writing sections. Leslie has a clear understanding of what the test is designed to assess and was able to provide me with many helpful strategies to approach problems I found challenging. I met with Leslie over the course of eight weeks, and my score improved 9 points to a 160! Leslie is very personable and a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend working with her.

My 10th grade son has been working with Leslie for the full school year and she has been tremendous, not only as a writing tutor, but also because of her flexibility. She has worked with my son on organizing his ideas into an outline, developing his thoughts in writing, increasing the complexity of his writing, and grammar. Best of all, Leslie was able to conduct video tutoring sessions over Skype for extra sessions or when their schedules did not sync.

Leslie is an excellent tutor. She helped me prepare for the GRE. She has a great understanding of the test design and what the test is actually designed to assess. I highly, highly recommend her. She is very knowledgeable, patient, and experienced!

Leslie met with my son once a week for two months prior to SAT. My son gained 130 points in reading and writing. The experience was painless and much more effective than group SAT class.

I hired Leslie after two failed attempts with the NC Bar Exam. Her approach to tutoring was very effective and she customized a plan for me to improve on my weaknesses. The biggest help was Leslie's ability to write questions that were original and unlike any seen on previously released NC Bar Exams. She paid careful attention in reviewing my assignments, providing me with a detailed and personalized critique so I could truly improve and succeed this last time. I did not even use a bar prep course to prepare for my third time taking the bar exam; I had Leslie. I highly recommend Leslie if you want some honest, effective and efficient tutoring.

Leslie has helped me learn how best to write a standard five-paragraph essay under a thirty-minute time limit. She has taught me how to brainstorm in order to come up with a good thesis statement and bullet points to feature in the essay. Her help has been invaluable in learning how to write the right kind of essay that many advanced testing formats require. She is very clear and specific in her explanations, and she makes sure that I understand what I need to do in order to get the score I want. Working with her is great and well worth it.

Due to a stint at the Governor's School, my son had limited time to work with a tutor prior to his Senior year's SAT tests. Mrs. N helped my son grow by 150 - 200 points in his overall score, with his writing scores being the largest growth area, in just the limited 6 week time.

I contacted Leslie while I was studying to take the bar exam for the 3rd time. I knew that essays were my weak point. Leslie was able to help me organize my essays in a more concise manner. She helped me in what I should and should not include in them. Leslie has an abundance of her own essays which was very helpful. I had been practicing with barbri essays. If I didn't know the answer I would just look it up. By writing essays for Leslie I was forced to write them the way I would on the bar exam if I didn't know the answer. Leslie offered great critiques of my essays and was very fast at getting back to me. We met a few times in person, which was also very helpful. The critiques that Leslie gave me on my essays were very helpful. They guided me in knowing what I needed to fix and how. She is a great tutor for the bar exam! She is also very encouraging!!! I would highly recommend her if you are looking for help on your essays for the bar exam!!!

I contacted Leslie through WyzAnt to work with my daughter, who has a learning difference, on improving her ACT scores in the area of English. In the past month, my daughter has made excellent progress in preparing for the next round of the ACT. Leslie creates a calm and relaxed working environment during the tutoring session. Her bright and encouraging personality motivates my daughter to please Leslie and perform at her best during instruction. Since working with Leslie, I realize the sessions have helped my daughter to improve her all around English skills, which have made her more successful in the high school classroom and will help prepare her for college. After the ACT test is over, my daughter has asked if she may continue working with Leslie to expand her writing skills in preparation for college essays. My daughter loves working with Leslie and looks forward to her tutoring sessions, even after a long day at school. It is important to note Leslie is experienced in tutoring children with learning differences. It is my opinion, a child will be more successful and the outcome of the tutoring sessions more productive, if the tutor is skilled and experienced in working with students academically challenged.

Leslie helped me prepare for the verbal section of the GRE. With her assistance, I achieved a competitive score and I feel confident applying to graduate programs. She served as an invaluable resource, providing me with techniques for reading comprehension, critical reasoning and sentence correction. She also helped me to develop game plan for the analytic writing section—timing was my biggest obstacle! I’m very grateful for her help and I would highly recommend her as a tutor.

Amy P. from Durham, NC

Leslie is working with my daughter on SAT prep. Our schedule has been chaotic and she has been understanding of that, flexible, and clear about her scheduling policies. My daughter really likes her approach to the process, and the way that she explains things. Highly recommend.

I reached out to Leslie in the early stages of preparing for my 4th attempt at the North Carolina Bar Exam. I knew I needed help on my essay writing if there was any chance I was ever going to pass this exam. Leslie responded to my tutoring request immediately and was very knowledgeable, helpful, and responsive. She evaluated my past essay answers, gave me detailed suggestions on how to improve my writing style, and provided me with practice essays in subject areas that I felt I needed more practice on. Leslie's feedback and advice was invaluable and I can honestly say that I would not have had a successful outcome on the February 2016 NC Bar Exam without her.
